Fence Costs in Cambridge (2026)
Planning ranges for fencing in Cambridge in 2026, and a straight account of why two quotes for the same run of fence can be thousands apart.
Fence quotes vary more than almost any other trade for what looks like the same work, and it is seldom the material doing it. Two hundred-foot board fences can differ by thousands because one is on open ground a machine can reach and the other is behind a house, through a narrow side gate, around three mature trees, with an old fence to pull out first. Length is the least informative number in the conversation.
What actually drives the price
- Access. Whether a machine can get to the line. Hand-digging every hole and carrying every bag of concrete through a side gate is routinely the biggest single gap between two quotes.
- What is in the ground. In Cambridge this is a live risk rather than a formality. The older Galt, Preston and Hespeler lots hide stone, old foundations and demolition rubble, and a post hole that stops at eighteen inches is a different job from one that does not.
- Removing the old fence. Old posts set in concrete are real work and the concrete has to go somewhere.
- Grade. Cambridge is not flat. Slope means racking or stepping, more posts, more layout time.
- Gates. A gate costs several times the equivalent run of fence, and a wide double gate more again, because the posts and hardware have to carry it.
- Material. Treated spruce, cedar, chain link, vinyl and aluminum sit at different points, but material is usually a smaller share of a residential quote than people expect.
What makes two quotes comparable
Post depth, post spacing, number of rails, material grade, whether removal and disposal is included, and what happens if the ground is not what it looked like. A per-foot figure with none of that behind it cannot be compared with anything — setting two side by side tells you which contractor was more optimistic about what is under the grass, and nothing more useful than that.
Pool enclosures
Priced differently because the requirements are different: the 1.5 metre minimum, lockable gates at enclosure height, no climbable gaps, and the City's plans and permit inside the schedule. Frequently, though, most of the enclosure already exists as the house, the garage and an existing fence, so the real work is smaller than a full perimeter — which is the argument for having it looked at rather than assuming a number.
Where money is best spent
On what goes in the ground. The post is the fence, and in Cambridge more than most places what the post is sitting in is an open question until someone digs. Paying up for board grade while economising on depth, spacing and footing is precisely backwards, and it is the standard route from a fence that seemed like good value to a repair quote five years on.

Does the lower height limit make fences cheaper here?
Marginally, on material — a 2.1 metre fence uses slightly less than a 2.44 metre one. It makes no difference to the part that costs money, which is the posts and the digging. Nobody should be quoting you a discount for it.
Is chain link cheaper than wood?
Per foot, generally yes, particularly over longer runs, and it asks nothing of you afterwards. Black vinyl-coated costs more than galvanized. What wood buys is privacy, which chain link does not provide at any price.
Why does the gate cost so much?
It is a moving structure carrying its weight on two hinges, so it needs heavier posts, bracing and hardware, and it is the part most likely to give trouble later if underbuilt. Wide gates for a trailer or mower cost more again.

Is winter cheaper?
